Fast Decline
Got a decline email on my inbox for a seed capital proposal I sent to 3i days ago, actually the answer was pretty fast and I appreciate that. They politely decline saying they are not investing in Venture Capital anymore.

Different Quality of Partners
Had 3i Deutschland on our board. They did not understand the value of our businesses model and did not provide valuable input other than the investment

Not a VC Anymore
I heard 3i stopped doing startup investing and refocused the entire team on LBO or some other way of making big money.

They are Not Venture: but Bank...
Pitching 3i a venture early stage is waisting their and your time. I was told directly by one of their partners (Chris Rowlands) that they are not really interested in early stage and venture any more, but only solid companies with big track records, kind of like Index. MBOs, M&As and the likes. Maybe series C if you have traction.

Experience with Jim Mc Lean
Jim McLean has bounced around a bit in the venture world. He spent many years at Accel, was at Highland for awhile, was a senior guy at a Volpe, Brown, Whelan fund called Bedrock where he invested in my startup, formed his own fund briefly (Basis Ventures) and merged it with ComVentures before joining 3i. I don't know the circumstances of all of the moves, but I know a number of Jim's colleagues and they regard him, as do I, as a terrific guy to work with.

Limited Exposure
Their organisation has changed from country to sector focus and thus the local team does not have that much to say. More like a follower than an interesting active player in the market.

Very Slow Road
We pitched 31 informally at least a half a dozen times. Each time, they expressed interest, and each time the process dragged on... It was like they were taking meetings to look busy. They then made an investment in a related space. I would recommend that you qualify the interest before wasting time, and, if it moves slow, pull out.

Buy Vip
Very fast and flexible investment process, including due dilligence. The "romance" took place accross Europe (London, Frankfurt and Madrid plus videoconferencing with a French colleague) showing their international coverage key for an International start up. Cross contacts to enhance and help our execution path were raised in the first steps of the process which showed their use and importance at early stages. These contacts included their entrepreneur network which was quite nice since the talk and feeling was very similar to ours. Good chemistry and commitment working on a shareholder agreement around the clock until 6am (beer closing time). Great investment knowhow helped to have very quick discussions and reach agreements at a very short time spam -as even our lawyers confessed, I guess half surprised and half expecting to charge more hours ;-)

Pillar to Post, but Direct
We were asked to submit a pitch, was then passed about a bit, and then told that they couldn't invest because of other things in the pipeline. Clearly they knew about them when they first came to meet us, so why did they ask for a pitch"

Great People, and Very Good Knowledge of Internet Businesses
I have been very impressed by 3i both in term of understanding of our business (at the beginning + in the long run, since they entered 2,5 years ago), and in term of what they brought to us. Jean-David Chamboredon (head of 3i Venture Business for France) is a great partner to work with, very clever and helpfull. He helps us in our acquisition strategy a lot (really "hands on") + does not loose long-term focus, when some VCs' can sometime be short-term minded.

3i = Ignoring Ideas and Innovations
Agree with the previous comments. These "nice guys" are just spreedsheet jockeys devoid of vision -- they are worry-wart followers, not strong leaders with a slow-as-molasses decison-making process. These are the most anti-Silicon Valley types in the valley; wouldn't know real deal if it bit them one the big toe and wouldn't let go.

A Classic Late Stage Fund
Nice people, polite and polished, lots of banker types, little understanding of what's really happening on the technology market.

Smart and Select
Great team and high level required! They recently IPOed Poliris, and made a lot of money. Venture investments in France include Priceminister and Screentonic. Highly recommand Jean-David for his smartness (checkout his blog at http://jdch.blogspot.com). Not into early stage, 3i rather invests to boost businesses. Great expectations in terms or returns.

Spreading Money Around
One company founder I met had a terrible experience with these guys. They were mainly focused on getting the deal done and put complex conditions which a start up making it unfavourable for the portfolio company.
